Bedroom Buying Guide

We sleep, dress and sometimes even work in our bedrooms. It also serves as an important place for extra storage, containing handy space at the tops of wardrobes and under the bed for occasional use items. As such, it's important to get the style and storage of the room right, both for relaxation and day-to-day living, and to ensure you are choosing the right combination of storage to suit your lifestyle.

Measuring for your bedroom furniture

It's important to measure all items of bedroom furniture before purchasing, so you can be confident that you have enough room. As well checking the dimensions of the furniture itself, make sure there is enough room to walk comfortably around the room, in particular around the bed. You should also make sure that you can open wardrobe doors and extend all chest, bedside and divan drawers properly so you can make the most of your storage.

Configuring your storage

Think about what storage you require and select the combination that will work best for you. Unnecessary or inadequate storage can make it harder to find things you need and take up unnecessary room in your bedroom. It can also make the room look cramped, cluttered and untidy, which can interfere with your ability to sleep. As such, try to align your storage with your practical requirements and be mindful of the amount of space you have available.

We have several different kinds of bedroom storage available which can be mixed and matched accordingly:

  • Bedside cabinets
  • Chests of drawers
  • Wardrobes
  • Blanket boxes
  • Dressing tables with storage
  • Divans with storage

You may also wish to try a combination wardrobe, which integrates several different kinds of storage. Some of these wardrobes have customisable interiors and some are modular, so you can select a custom size to suit your bedroom.

Bedroom ranges

A bedroom range is a selection of pieces in the same style and finish that can be used to create a whole new look for your bedroom. Some ranges include just the basics, while others include a variety of storage options so you can adapt your storage to the space.

The bed will be the centrepiece of the room, so make sure you are happy with this feature of a bedroom range. Alternatively, you can buy the rest of the furniture and replace the bed frame with a divan.

Finishes

Bedroom furniture can come in many different finishes to suit a variety of interiors or your existing furniture.

  • Oak and oak veneers have a beautiful woodgrain and suit both modern and more rustic designs. Oak veneers reduce the likelihood of character features such as knots and reduce the risk of splitting
  • Pine is a light wood that's easy to stain, so you are more likely to find it in darker or more interesting finishes. As it is less heavy, it is easier to manoeuvre than woods such as oak
  • Woods used less frequently, such as mango wood, will provide a more unusual finish, giving your home a unique look
  • Painted finishes are great for a contemporary look. A white, cream or grey finish works well with different colours schemes
  • Whitewash wood finishes are increasing in popularity. Their pale colour helps to open up the space and make the room feel bigger
  • Reclaimed wood is eco-friendly and works well with industrial looks. Its marks and character features give it a distressed and one-of-a-kind appearance
  • High gloss furniture has a clean and ultra-modern feel
